Cayman Courts Graduate 17 More Rehabilitated Offenders
In the Cayman Islands-one of only three Caribbean nations to have a drug court within its criminal justice system-it is a pre-sentencing diversion programme for offenders whose criminal history is linked to chemical dependency. The goal of the programme is to stop criminal activity related to the abuse of drugs.
"Such diversion programmes are seen as an integral part of a wider strategic approach to addressing the problems associated with crime and drugs," said Ms Chesnut. "Through collaboration, cooperation and re-allocation of resources, agencies and departments have made this programme work. We are encouraged by the successes so far."
