Cowlitz County Drug Court is Expanding
"This program is a net plus for the community — not only in terms of lives turned around, but also in money saved. As we would expect, the lower recidivism rate for Drug Court graduates translates into a considerable savings for taxpayers. Moreover, sending an offender through Drug Court costs roughly one-tenth what it costs to put that offender behind bars for an equal period of time.
A study by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy calculates that taxpayers save $2.45 for every dollar invested in Drug Court. That $1 million federal investment would seem no less a windfall for county taxpayers than it is for the local Drug Court program."
