Description:
Divorce is not just a legal event. It is an emotional as well as a financial event that will have long-term consequences for the future. A team of professionals – lawyers, mental health professionals, and financial professionals – all working in concert can help families navigate this major life transition. Interdisciplinary collaborative law is a dispute resolution method where the parties and the professionals are committed to negotiating settlements that are custom-designed to meet each family’s specific needs without having to resort to litigation.
This basic training will enable participants to understand the paradigm shift in thinking that is necessary to move from competitive, positional bargaining to interest-based negotiation. Participants will learn effective communication skills for handling interpersonal conflict. Professionals in each discipline will learn how their unique skills and training can assist clients to negotiate satisfactory agreements. The theories of how and why collaborative law works will be illustrated in demonstrations by the instructors and role-plays by the participants. Participants will leave the class with a practical working knowledge of the nuts and bolts for starting, continuing, and concluding a collaborative law case as well as a knowledge base for how to work effectively within the collaborative law professional team.
